Most of the residential neighbourhoods in Tehran consist of building blocks which are attached to the adjacent buildings on three sides, leaving only one side of the building exposed for ventilation and sunlight penetration. This project attempts to address this matter as one of the most common issues of residential buildings in cities like Tehran. The idea was to improve the quality of these residential units which play a major role in our everyday life.
A narrow gap was created along one side of the building which was later connected to two internal light wells. The light wells were also linked through the ducts on the ceiling to provide a continuous natural convection system as well as proper natural lighting throughout the building. This gap is covered with glass on each level, making it a part of the unit space.
Another issue addressed in this project was the lack of proper green space in the residential units. Green spaces were created in three forms:
1.
A vertical greenspace was implemented along the side gap. This greenery not only creates a pleasant view and atmosphere for the units, but also provides proper ventilation with a fresh feeling of the garden.
2.
The façade of the building contains scattered flower boxes which are visible from both the exterior and the interior of the building.
3.
The green roof as well as the greenery at the base of the light wells act as a continuation of the vertical greenspace to further enhance the living atmosphere of the units.
