The main idea of this project was to achieve a singular form which defines both the interior and the exterior space organizations. Inspired by the concept of negative space in the Persian architecture, the design was initiated by subtracting volumes from a solid cubical form.
Creation of negative spaces simultaneously forms interior and exterior spaces so that all the elements are formed by a singular strategy.
Following the initial design idea which was inspired by the Persian architecture, brick was used with a glaze of turquoise color as the main material for this project. Bricks were organized based on a traditional bricklaying technique called Fakhromadin which creates a paternal void system in the layout.
Together these two techniques (negative space and Fakhromadin layout) form three spatial qualities: open, semi-open, and closed spaces inside and outside the building. On the exterior façade, the combination of the negative spaces and the variations in brick layout create semi-open and open balconies as well as green spaces with varied heights. Inside the building, on the other hand, this system defines spaces and boundaries between units.
