This project consisted of designing a residential tower near the beach in the hot and dry climate of Kish Island.
The main design criteria were as follows:
·
To achieve a model flexible enough to define a variety of unit areas
·
To provide beach view for every unit
·
To provide proper shading as well as natural ventilation for the units
·
To create consistency between different design elements
The design procedure was initiated by determining the position of the building relative to the site in order to optimize the beach view. The second design attempt was to create two major voids dividing the initial solid volume into three volumetric masses. This division defines unit boundaries and creates private access to each unit. Moreover, these voids significantly improve natural ventilation through the building.
Taking into account the climatic condition of the site, controlling sunlight penetration was an important design factor. Density variations in the façade louvres helped addressing this issue by controlling the amount of sunlight penetration according to the position and function of each space. In some sections, this system converts to a solid surface with small window openings to minimize the amount of generated heat. The entrance is created as a continuation of one of the main voids and is surrounded by two building masses which provide all year long shading for this area.
