This project included the design of an amphitheater as an extension to the existing Kish University building.
The design criteria were as follows:
1.
To create a void facing the sea as a view point for visitors in hallways and the waiting room
2.
To control the amount of sunlight penetration
3.
To create consistency between the existing building and the new addition
The existing building consists of regular hexagons forming the interior courtyards as well as the building boundaries. Following the same concept, a hexagon shape was used to form the new extension which was attached to the existing building on one edge.
The facade of the building consists of two parts; one is an opaque material with hexagon shaped openings in harmony with the plan. Inspired by Persian-Islamic Architecture, stained glasses with Arabesque motifs were used on the openings to better control the amount of sunlight penetration. The other part of the facade consists of continuous glass panels to maximize view to the sea. The motifs were also printed on these glasses in harmony with the other part of the facade.
